Reconstructing Reality
Student Project
Description
___

At this point I present my BA assignment in Photography, which I completed during the academic year 2009-2010.
The final deliverables of this project were ten 60x60 frames which illustrate portraits of ten different young people whose ages were between 18 and 28 years old. Part of the deliverables was also a video in which photos of the models appeared. The rapid change in the sequence of the photos creates the illusion that the illustrated person is in motion.
The photographs below combine portrait and street photography as the procedure was performed outdoors. The photos are in square format and the models are depicted in the center of the frame, creating the impression that the model "looks" directly to the viewer. According to these elements  there is also a reference to studio photography.
My goal was to create a sort of "dialogue" between the model and the viewer. I "invaded" model's life for a brief moment and learnt some information about him/her. "Conceived" those inside a photograph and through that presented  those information to the viewer. After the above process, the viewer builts a completely different relation with the photographed model. The viewer creates a story, a guess, about the model, based on the clues  that have been provided to him from the photograph. If these clues are fake, the viewer will create a story that do not correspond to reality.
The title "Reconstructing Reality", states that photography is a way of creating reality. It shapes our perception of reality and often takes its place. The photographs present a version of visible reality.
